This collection documents the the expirences of black people in Maine. The documents ways the community interacted with the state goverment. The documents come from different state departments and fuctions and time periods. To tell parts of the story of the black expirence in Maine.
Maine's black population starts with some of the earlest european settlement. Though small in number the communites in Maine have been active a vibrebt through out the states history.
Letter from Governor McDonald to Governor Kent Requesting Extradition of Philbrook and Kelleran
- Letter from James J. McDonald, Governor of Georgia, to Maine's Governor Edward Kent renewing the demand for extradition of Captain Daniel Philbrook and First Mate Edward Kelleran [Kellerun or Killoran] in order to "preserve amicable relations between the States of Georgia and Maine, two members of this great confederacy, and to maintain the harmony of the Union."
