Information
Description - Governor Enoch Lincoln in 1827, signs a measure choosing Augusta to be Maine's state capital. He believes that Augusta's upland and more central location besides the Kennebec at the place where it had always been easiest to cross the river, will prove better for Maine than Portland, Brunswick, Hallowell, Belfast, Waterville, or Wiscasset. Towns that had also been considered.
