Information
Description - On July 1st, 1863, Charles Tilden was asked to buy time. The Castine store clerk, now colonel of the 16th Maine Regiment, was ordered to take his men and slow the advance of Confederate troops charging into Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Tilden and the men of the 16th Maine, did as they were asked. Their sacrifice allowed the Union Army to retreat to the town's high ground.
