Maine Volunteer Militia (Post-Civil War)
Correspondence and other records of Maine’s militia in the years after the Civil War. Much of the collection includes requests for aid in obtaining veteran pensions.

World War I
The Maine National Guard kept personnel records for all soldiers who entered the service under the National Guard during World War I. After the Guard was mobilized by the federal government in 1917, the State no longer kept soldiers' service files but did keep general records of those who served. This gallery features only the Maine National Guard's records of soldiers who participated in World War I.

Civil War
The Maine State Archives holds one of the most extensive collections of Civil War records in the country. This collection includes documents from various Maine regiments, such as clothing books, post-war addresses, enlistment papers, and muster rolls. During the war, municipal officials faced significant challenges as they were tasked with meeting federal and state quotas for volunteers from their cities and towns. They also had to establish and distribute bounties to encourage enlistment and ensure that eligible families of volunteers received "State Aid." The correspondence within the archives provides researchers with valuable insights into the logistical difficulties the war created for the State of Maine, as well as the hardships experienced by citizens and the dependent families of soldiers during this time. Much of the Civil War Collection consists of incoming correspondence from officers of various Maine units, addressed to either the Adjutant General of Maine or the three governors who served during the Civil War. This correspondence offers a unique perspective on how the volunteer regiments functioned. The collection also includes field hospital reports and photographs of Maine’s officers.

General Henry Sewall Papers - 8th Division Militia
The militia book and personal papers belonging to General Henry Sewall (1752-1845) of Augusta, who served in the Revolutionary War and wintered at Valley Forge in 1778. After the war, Sewall opened a store at Fort Western in Augusta and served as Division Inspector, Brigadier and Major General of the 8th Division of the Maine militia.
